Trolltunga, or ‘The Troll’s Tongue,’ is located in Ullensvang municipality, Vestland county, Norway, and is a rock formation that towers 1100 meters above sea level and extends 700 meters over the northern end of Ringedalsvatnet.

Trolltunga, located in Vestland in southwestern Norway, is a rocky cliff that hangs picturesquely over Ringedalsvatnet.

This fantastic rock is part of a mountain range and is a geological formation that dates back to the Ice Age over 10,000 years ago! The iconic Trolltunga, towering over the beautiful lake below, was formed by glacial erosion. When a large part of the mountain was broken off by the glacier’s movement, it left behind the unique Trolltunga rock formation that we see today.

Start on the Trolltunga trail, expect a hike of 28 km (about 17 mi) with an elevation gain of 800 m (2600 ft). The hike from Skjeggedal usually takes 8 to 12 hours, depending on the pace. Hiking the Trolltunga cliffs requires good physical fitness and suitable hiking gear. The path on the side of the mountain is bumpy and rocky. In wet or snowy areas, the ground can become slippery.

  • From Tyssedal, the 38-kilometer round trip to Trolltunga takes around 15 hours with a 2000-meter elevation gain.
  • From Skjeggedal, the 27-kilometer round trip to Trolltunga takes 8-12 hours with a 1200-meter elevation gain.
  • From Magelitopp, the 20-kilometer round trip to Trolltunga takes 7-10 hours with around a 1000-meter elevation gain.

The summer months between June and September are the best time to hike Trolltunga due to mild weather and snow-free trails in Norway.

You need a guide to visit Trolltunga between early October and the end of May. During the Norwegian summer, experienced hikers can hike Trolltunga without a guide.
